Workforce training has faced a gap between classroom-based theory and practical implementation. Additionally, classroom-based learning often does not yield the highest efficiency among workforces with diverse learning needs. When considering methods such as E-learning to educate workforces, the gap between what is taught and reality becomes increasingly wider. In recent years, immersive technologies have emerged as an alternative to traditional learning methodologies. Furthermore, immersive technologies allow learning methods to improve over time by collecting data insights connected to learner's educational experiences.

Why use AR or VR for workforce training?

Think of conventional training programs that organisations currently use. Digital or on-field, those methods are slower, tedious, and sometimes lack the adaptability for a versatile workforce. By using technologies such as Augmented and Virtual Reality, workforces can efficiently learn with the help of engaging, practical, and realistic experiences. The results of learning with immersive technologies are evident as more Fortune 500 companies adapt to it. To name a few, Walmart, Microsoft, Boeing, Intel, BMW, and Honeywell have already implemented AR and VR to train their workforce. With AR and VR, the workforce can visualise and experience the entire work process, down to every component of the system. As the adoption of immersive technology to train workforces in large multinational organisations increases, so does the evidence base that immersive technology as an educational facilitator works.

How does AR & VR collect data to improve the learning experience?

AR and VR, with the help of data analytics, can further enhance the learning experience. Objective data collected over time can show what works well, what learners dislike and commonalities in experiences between learners. This data collection and the subsequent analysis can allow developers and content creators to personalise learning experiences. The benefit of a personalised approach is two-fold. Learners get educational experiences that are better tailored to their individual needs and organisations can more easily identify areas where workflow is lagging. As technology improves, it is likely we'll see better integration between data analytics and immersive technology. Better integration should, in turn, should enhance benefits for learners and organisations.

Whilst it is apparent that immersive technologies can enable better learning experiences, data should be considered a key facilitator to a deeper understanding of how to make those experiences better suited to individuals. With the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic still felt across the globe, it may be more important than ever, to ensure that when training can be undertaken, it is as effective as it can be.  Its likely over the next decade, we’ll see greater integration of objective data into the process of creating educational content. 

As time progresses, what is likely to happen with continuing advances in technology and market demand, is the integration of user data in real time. That is, content which can manifest to become better suited to an individual’s needs as the content unfolds before them. It is technology such as Artificial Intelligence that can make this a reality.
